In 2013, a client’s bulk carrier of 75000DWT suffered from bent rudder stock, after grounding. A team of technicians boarded in order to assess the extent of damage and remove defective parts. The rudder stock and the tiller were found damaged. The rudder was brought into our workshop where it was straightened using our heavy-duty hydraulic press of 600 tons and controlled heating at the same time. The rudder deformation was monitored carefully at all times, during the process with dial gauges and sensors. During repairs, the tiller keyway was also restored. The project was closely supervised by the vessel’s classification society NKK. It took a week to rectify the damage including dismantling and re-assembly.
